Unprecedented ruling for slander committed through Twitter

Twitter

In February 2017, an attorney Monica Lang, intending to go unnoticed, created a Twitter account, @EVAargentina20, with the sole purpose of attack a renowned Argentine businessman, Marcelo Frydlewsky, with twitts, falsely accusing him of committing several crimes.

The twitts went viral soon and provoked the reaction of the businessman, who reported her for slander for having injured his good name and honor.

He sued for a compensation of one million pesos (about 50,000 dollar) that would be donated to a public good entity, and the publication of the ruling in the two most important newspapers in the country.

At the settlement hearing scheduled by the Judge, it was agreed to replace the compensation for 150 hours of community work that the defendant should perform at Caritas Argentina within the term of one year, whereas Ms. Lang still needs to publish her retraction in the newspapers Clarín and Nación.

This is the first case in which someone is condemned in Argentina slander between particulars occurred through the social media.
